Exposing the big wireless free & unlimited illusion. Consumer Cellular's New Study Reveals How Unchecked Loyalty and Unlimited Plans Quietly Drain Consumers' Wallets
A look behind the illusion of "free"

For years, “Big Wireless” carriers have conditioned consumers to equate “unlimited” with value and “free” with savings. But new national research conducted by The Harris Poll for Consumer Cellular finds that millions of Americans—especially those 50 and older—
are likely paying more than necessary for service and devices they don’t fully use or understand.

The study shines a light on the illusion of savings often fueled by Big Wireless practices that involve less than transparent offers, complicated pricing, bundled perks and long-term contracts that disguise the true cost of ownership.

Overpaying for unused data. Nearly eight in ten mobile consumers age 50+ report having an unlimited plan or using less data than their plan allows each month, while more than half in that age range report they don’t actually know how much data they use. Consumer Cellular’s own network data show that the company’s average customer age 50 and older uses just over 5GB of data per month. That means potentially billions in collective overpayment by Americans 50+ annually.

Misled by “free.” Roughly one in four Americans accepted a “free” or “on-us” phone offer without realizing the commitment or plan details attached—proof that the fine print often outlives the excitement of the upgrade.

Confusion breeds complacency. While half of mobile consumers over 50 don’t know their data usage, many admit they don’t even know how to check it and remarkably, a large portion of all mobile consumers never shop for a better deal.

NUMBERS. 79% of all mobile consumers age 50+ either have unlimited plans or consistently use less data than their plan allows. [Fig. 1] Consumers are paying for data they’ll never use. 27% of U.S. adults—an estimated 73 million Americans1—accepted a “free” or “on us” phone offer without understanding the fine print. [Fig. 2] Hidden terms and inflated rates erase the promised savings. 90% of mobile consumers believe most people don’t understand the true costs behind “free” phone promotions. Misperceptions are widespread, leaving consumers vulnerable. 53% of mobile consumers 50+ don’t know how much data they use—
and close to a third (28%) don’t know how to check. Knowledge gaps contribute directly
to overpayment. 43% of all mobile consumers never shop for a better mobile plan, including 53% of those 50+. Unchecked loyalty often results in unnecessary expense. Exposing a Hidden Transfer of Value. Consumer Cellular’s analysis suggests these habits create a “loyalty tax” on long-term customers. The least demanding users—many in midlife or retirement—are subsidizing
the heaviest data users and “free-phone” promotions. "Consumers assume loyalty saves them money. In wireless, it often does the opposite.
Our name is Consumer Cellular for a reason; our goal is to shine a light on what people are really paying for and help them keep more of what they earn.” Ed Evans CEO Consumer Cellular. Consumer Guidance. 1. Audit your data usage. Check your phone settings or carrier dashboard to see how much data you really use each month. 2. Calculate your true costs. When evaluating a “free” phone offer, factor in the required plan and contract length. Shop around once a year. Even a quick review can reveal simpler, lower-cost options that better match
your usage.
